PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT), also known as ALA/PDT, is a treatment performed with a topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan that is applied to your skin and then activated with laser light. These treatments remove sun damaged precancerous spots called actinic keratoses, and also improve fine lines, blotchy pigmentation, stubborn acne, and the appearance of scars.
LEVULAN
Levulan is a liquid that is painted on the skin to sensitize it to light. It is used in combination with light exposure to treat sun damaged skin, and recently it is starting to be used to treat acne. The treatment causes a peeling reaction that destroys sun damage and reduces acne. It takes a few to several days to heal from the treatment.
The procedure consists of painting the skin with the Levulan liquid and allowing to to soak in for an hour. The skin is then exposed to light. Various light sources can be used, but we use a pulsed dye laser. After the treatment it is very important that the skin be protected from additional light exposure for 24 hours. This means wear a hat to go home and stay inside the next day, away from windows and bright lights. Note that additional light exposure can cause a more severe reaction. Over the next few days the skin will redden and become swollen. During the healing process peeling occurs. This sometimes can take several days and patients need to be prepared for several days of restricted activities.
One treatment is all that is usually necessary for sun damage. Acne treatment usually requires several treatments over several months.
